Background and Objectives

Since 1984, the EU has been promoting Europe-wide research and technological development. The 7th EU Framework Programme, FP7, is open for participation from all over the world and the EU is trying to incorporate outside knowledge and expertise for its competitiveness. Japanese participation in FP7 project has increased to more than 100, and the Europe-Japan cooperation has been gradually reinforced, through the 6 coordinated calls and the joint call by the CONCERT-Japan project, among others. From January 2010 to December 2012 for 3 years, the J-BILAT project offered information service on FP7, organized events, operated help desk.

In 2014, the more ambitious and inclusive programme, Horizon 2020 will be launched including innovation and education of entrepreneurs, which will be active for the coming 7 years. Prior to it, a new project after J-BILAT was launched in September 2013, and will contribute to the reinforcement of Europe-Japan cooperation for 3 years. In this first seminar as the public launch of the JEUPISTE project, Science, Technology and Innovation policies of the EU and Japan were summarized and strategic partnership were sought through common understanding of the areas for potential cooperation, current collaboration status and future perspectives.
